GSGBC October Newsletter

Our afterschool program is in full swing and we wanted to share some of our current classes and Club updates that we have going on. Shared October 1, 2024.

Afterschool at St. Frances Cabrini

This is our 2nd year of afterschool programming at our first Site-Based Club, St. Frances Cabrini Academy (SFCA). We have loved getting to know the community there and the youth. It has been a wonderful addition to the GSGBC family!

We have also recently added tennis to our programming at SFCA. Our members have really taken it to heart and have been dedicated to learning the game with Breakpoint Tennis.

Calming Corners

Thanks to our social worker Elia (LMSW), and a grant from the Mental Health Board, each classroom now has a "Calming Corner" at our Soulard and Dutchtown locations.

In Calming Corners, children can spend time relaxing, practicing mindfulness or other coping skills when they need to regulate their emotions.

We are so excited to have these comforting spaces for our members! Thank you Elia & MHB!

GSGBC is partnering with The Brick Buddies to give our members access to LEGO art and engineering! As a part of our new partnership, The Brick Buddies has provided LEGO products and a cabinet

to each GSGBC location for our members to use during the afterschool program. Their creations will be showcased in a LEGO display case for parents and peers to admire.

The Brick Buddies held a presentation at GSGBC on September 15th and shared their vast knowledge of all things LEGO, including ideas for: build projects, play, sorting, photography and sharing.

The Brick Buddies have built successful careers using LEGO products and they want to share how to make those kinds of opportunities with the next generation of LEGO builders. We are so excited for this partnership!

Fat Bear Contest Has Begun!

GSGBC Members joined people around the world to take part in the Fat Bear Bracket and choose the Fat Bear Champion! Each Fall, the brown bears at Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park, Alaska take advantage of the salmon run to bulk up for their winter hibernation. During this time, the bears can eat up to 40 salmon a day!

Members observed the park’s 24/7 web cams to learn about the bears and choose their favorite. To enter the GSGBC competition, members did research about bears and made their bracket selections. Winners will be announced during a Fat Bear Award Ceremony.

Mary, our Academic Coordinator, kicked off Fat Bear Week with cute bear suckers and fun information on bears!

We are excited to announce our new partnership with St. Louis Violence Prevention and involvement with their Youth Engagement & Safety Committee.

St. Louis Area Violence Prevention Commission works to reduce violent crime in the region by promoting and advocating for coordinated, well-resourced policies, support systems, and interventions among area governments, institutions and agencies that serve individuals and families most at risk of violent crime. STL VPC is a regional, cross-sector collaboration.
